Once in a while, a certain kind of talent pervades our consciousness, rupturing the vernacular and hijacking the way we see things with such stylish seduction it makes you wonder what on earth was hip or cool before.

Carrie Shaltz is that kind of talent. This ‘shoot what’s hip’ director and photographer acts with her heart and is set on reinventing the “reel”.

Which is why it’s no surprise that Carrie and her brother were the ‘chosen ones’ heading up smartphone megabrand BlackBerry’s latest ‘hotshots prefer BlackBerrys’ campaign.

Carrie’s artistic genius lies somewhere between the graphic acrobatics and cosmetic perfectionism she pulls out of the editing room and her talent to conjure raw energy from anything she points a camera at.

Imbued with wit and beauty, and laced with danger, her rock’n’roll mojo and huge horizons have drawn her to shoot cultural contrasts that range from animal masked nudists to Jane Austen retrospectives.

But her real gift lies not in her epic scope but in her ability to sweep you up in a riveting spectacle – with provocative visual innovations in vivid Technicolor or sumptuous film noir atmospherics – and an eye for the unexpected. Add that to her instinctive gift for stoking consumer desire and you’ve got the kind of visionary branding that can capture audience attention in a heartbeat.

If genius is one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration, it seems as though Carrie is either burning the candle at both ends or has found a way to make it look effortless.
